Birds are animals but the list of threatened New Zealand birds has been separated from the
'Threatened! Animals' page because New Zealand has a lot of native birds in danger of
becoming extinct.

threat of lots of predators, many native birds nested on the ground and became flightless.

The Department of Conservation scientists decide which New Zealand bird species need the
most help. They have a list of the most threatened species. The list is divided into three
groups, A, B and C. The birds listed in the ‘A’ group are the most threatened.
The list was put
together by the Department of Conservation in 1992.
